Thomas Garland Wallace

He was born December 9, 1929, in Iredell County and was the son of the late George W. and Maggie Steelman Wallace. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, was a member of the Harmony American Legion Post 113, and the Lions Club. He was a member of Harmony United Methodist Church where he was active in the United Methodist Men’s group, formerly sang in the church choir, and was a member of the building committee and parsonage committee. For many years, he worked with Watts Plumbing and Heating and retired as owner and operator of Tom Wallace Plumbing. For 10 years, he produced poultry for Perdue Farms, was a lifelong beef cattle farmer and a member of the Cattleman’s Association.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Doris White and Lucille Bowles; and a brother, Tony O. Wallace.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Betty Gaither Wallace, whom he married on April 28, 1949; a daughter, Pat Hollar (JJ) of Statesville; a son, Steve Wallace (Vicky) of Harmony; four grandchildren, Zack Wallace of Harmony, Jennifer Vandyck (Joe) of Manistique, Michigan, Kelly Hutchinson (Brian) of Albany, NY, and Christina Hollar of Hickory; four great-grandchildren, Caleb Hutchinson, Anna, Joey, and Jon Vandyck; a sister, Hester Parker (David) of Salisbury; a sister-in-law, Elton Wallace of Troutman; and a brother-in-law, Paul White of Clemmons.

Funeral services celebrating Tom’s life will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday at Harmony United Methodist Church with the Rev. Neal Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Harmony Cemetery with military honors being accorded by the Iredell County Veterans Council Burial Detail.

The family will receive friends at the church from 12:00 to 1:00 PM Wednesday at the church prior to the service.
