Arthur Melville George, 96, of Long Neck, Delaware, previously of Dauphin and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, died of multiple causes on September 2, 2018, at Delaware Hospice, surrounded by his loving children. He was born to the late Arthur and Louise (Furniss) George in Lancaster, PA, graduating from McCaskey High School in 1940, and from Lafayette College in 1947, where he was ranked number one on the Lafayette Tennis Team.
During WWII, Art proudly flew 30 missions as a lead navigator for the 447th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force, of the Army Air Corps on a B-17 Flying Fortress in the European Theatre, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross, a Presidential Unit Citation, the D-Day Normandy Victory Medal, and the Air Medal with Four Oak Leaf Clusters.
In 1945, Art married the love of his life, Helen Amelia Pieper, who preceded him in death. His survivors include five children, Linda (Tom) Martin of Kearney, NE; A. Douglas George of Long Neck, DE; Susan (Tom) Sheaffer of Dillsburg, PA; David (Diana) George of Lackawaxen, PA; and Laurie (Brad) Stabley of Dallastown, PA. Along with them, 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren mourn his loss.
Art was an auditor for the former Bell Telephone of Pennsylvania and retired as Audit Manager. After his retirement, he was an active member and past President of the former Harrisburg Council of Telephone Pioneers of America, and along with them, volunteered in the clean-up of Wilkes-Barre after hurricane Agnes in 1972, among many other volunteer efforts. He went on to serve as Treasurer of the Capital Life Member Club of Telephone Pioneers for 17 years.
In addition to his Pioneer activities, his children are so proud that their dad was known as a giver among his friends and in so many areas of the community. Formerly a member of Paxton Presbyterian Church, he currently is a member at Hope United Presbyterian Church in Dauphin. He served in the elective office of Lower Paxton Twp. Auditor for 18 years and as a volunteer in Apprise of Dauphin County Agency On Aging for 2 years. He was active in the PTA during his children's school years.
He attended many Army Air Corps reunions and became a Charter member of the National World War II Memorial in Washington D. C. Other than spending countless hours as a volunteer, one of his favorite past times was playing bridge at the Harrisburg Bridge Club, and he and Helen were running out of space for the glassware they won.
Art put his heart into everything he did with the intent of always doing his best, and he passed this on to his children. His kind and generous soul allowed him to live his life for others. He will be missed by all who knew him; he had such a great sense of humor and smile.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his granddaughter Sarah Beth George, and two sisters, Nancy (Bob) Frantz and Barbara (Bill) Hydro.
The visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 12, at Hope United Presbyterian Church in Dauphin, PA, followed by the funeral at 11:00 a.m. with graveside services at Rolling Green Cemetery in Camp Hill.
In lieu of flowers, it was Art's wish that memorial contributions be made to Hope United Presbyterian Church, Dauphin.
