Dale R. Updegraff, 85, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2018 at his home overlooking the Conodoguinet Creek in Camp Hill, PA. He was born on September 12, 1932 in New Cumberland, PA, the son of Joseph and Gayle (Hobaugh) Updegraff. Dale is survived by his wife of 51 years, Rose Marie (Byrne), who was the love of his life. He was very proud of his family including his daughter Tracy and her husband Rick Pawelski of Dillsburg, PA and two wonderful grandchildren Juliet, San Jose, Costa Rica, and Daniel, Boulder, Colorado.
Dale is survived by two sisters, Sara Ann Hosier and Shirley Hamburg (Don), along with nieces and nephews.
Dale graduated from New Cumberland High School in 1950. He was active in the Boy Scouts attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. In high school, he played the cornet in the orchestra and marching bands and was a member of the Trumpet Trio. He also played football for his high school team. Dale was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity at the University of Pennsylvania and graduated from Penn's Wharton School of Finance. He was a participant in the ROTC Program where he became a second lieutenant. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Air Force and was assigned to Ellington Air Force Base in Houston, Texas for navigation training and served as a navigator-bombardier on B-47 bombers.
Dale worked in various divisions at AMP Incorporated and later with the Susquehanna Valley Regional Medical Program, affiliated with the Pennsylvania Medical Society.
Dale did many things in his life. He enjoyed cooking, fun times with the Gourmet Club, and was the author of a cookbook on regional foods. He and his Dad built his bachelor apartment. He loved to drive his Austin Healey 3000 to Watkins Glen, NY for the Hill Climb races. Dale was one of the founders of the Susquehanna Ski Club and served in various leadership positions with the club. He served on the National Ski Patrol at Ski Roundtop for many years and passed his love of skiing onto his family. He and Rose Marie skied all over the world and enjoyed three-generation ski vacations with their grandkids in the Colorado Rockies. Dale continued to ski and bicycle into his 80's. During his life, he and Rose Marie traveled extensively throughout Europe and the United States. From dog sledding with the kids in Leadville, Colorado, to exploring exotic Istanbul, Dale and Rose Marie loved it all.
Dale was a wonderful husband, father and Pop-Pop and will be greatly missed by both family and friends. His ashes will be scattered in the places he loved.
There will be a Celebration of Life at Neill Funeral Home, 3401 Market Street, Camp Hill, on Sunday, July 22 at 3:00 p.m.
Every man dies but not every man lives. We know in our hearts that Dale lived!
