Ellen H. Miller, 103, was born on March 15, 1921, in Kato, Pennsylvania and called to the Lord on August 17, 2024, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Ellen was preceded in death by her loving husband, Clark Wayne Miller, who passed on April 25, 1970. As well as her parents, James Franklin and Emma Mae (Thompson) Houdeshell; her half-sister, Elisa (Josef) Hranic; brothers, George (Olive), Thomas, Edward, Gilbert (Marge); and her sisters, Pearl, Isabelle (Blaine McClellan, and Hilda (Harvey) Emel.
Ellen is survived by three children, Gwen Miller, Sharon Fair, and Gregg (Irene) Miller; two grandchildren Gregory (Dina) Miller and Audrey (Anthony) Myers; four great-grandchildren, Nikolaus and Makaila Moose, Olivia and Victoria Miller; and one great-great grandchild, Hayden Moose. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Bonnie (Gary) Ditty and numerous nieces and nephews.
Growing up, Ellen lived on a farm which inspired her hard-working personality. Upon her high school graduation from Howard High School, Ellen moved to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to attend Thompson Business Institute. Prior to her marriage, Ellen worked for Hershey Creamery.
Once Ellen had her beautiful children, she stayed home to be a mother, homemaker, and would volunteer her time at Rutherford Elementary School in either the cafeteria or on school trips. Once her children were of a self-caring age, Ellen decided it was time to obtain her driver’s license and return to the working world. From there, Ellen worked for Kelly Girls, Maryland Casualty, before retiring from Agway.
Ellen loved spending time with her family, whether it was a visit at home, holiday gathering, eating out or a road trip for ice cream. She was so fortunate to have experienced traveling to 10 countries and multiple states.
Ellen was of Christian faith and had been a member of the former Lawton Church of God. Until the last week of her life, Ellen read her tattered Bible daily and did devotions and prayers. She was a kind and caring person who always had a smile on her face. She had a spirit of giving to others and enjoyed sharing the cooked and baked goods that she assisted in making. Ellen could remember everyone’s birthdays and Anniversaries and was an avid Wheel of Fortune watcher and Penn State Football fan. She loved Jesus, family, friends and the various rescued dogs in her life. Ellen would wish that those who think of her would not feel sorrow but would feel joy and peace in recognition of her blessed life. Anyone wishing to honor her life could feel free to donate to Humane Society of Harrisburg Area, 7790 Grayson Road, Harrisburg PA 17111 or to Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church, 165 N 67th St; Harrisburg, PA 17111.
