Mami, thinking of you every single day! It's hard, trying to break a routine Erma and I carried on for so long! My September calendar with Mom written on it every other day, the days I was to be with you at Frey Village. Not knowing when you were going to leave us I had marked it for the whole month. I had more or less weaned myself out of the days when I would go to see you at your apartment and you always had to cook a meal and serve me coffee every time, not because you had to but because you wanted to! You wouldn't have it any other way! Then when your mind started faltering you, a few months after your 90th birthday Erma took you into her home! We know how hard that was for you, you were too independent for that life but we knew you couldn't be alone! After two years it was my turn to have you stay with me! By that time no home was your home because it didn't matter whose home you were in, you were not at home and not happy and always wanting to go home! But which home? Depending on your state of mind, home was your Vernon Street home of 40 some years where us three younger kids grew up in, or home to Erma or home way back meaning your childhood home. That's the nightmare of Alzheimers! It made you feel lost in this world even when we were there with you! I'm happy you have found your world at last, now we just need to work on getting by without you! I'll sure miss you and your everything you did for all of us your whole life through!

September 8th

From the first time I stepped into Ermelinda's house as a friend of her son Luis she made me feel like family. Four years later I married her daughter Erma. Her home was like family central. She made everyone that entered her home feel special. She did not have a lot but she gave everything she had. Stay strong family and keep your Mami in your hearts forever. I am sure she is in a better place beside her mother looking down on all of us.

When family,friends of family,neighbors or anyone stepped into her house she tried to make you feel special.She would take care of everybody like they were family.She did not have a lot but she would give every thing she had. She was like a mother to everyone. I know that now she is in a better place beside her mother looking down on all her family. Stay strong family for your Miami and keep her in your hearts forever until we meet again.

We were so very sorry to learn of your mother's passing.  You're all in our thoughts and prayers.  Cherish the wonderful memories you have.

Erma, Bea, Lil, Toni, and kids,
I am so sorry to hear about Mami passing, I know how much she meant to every single one of you. All of you loved her and treated her so dear.
She was a very special lady and I know she will be missed. She lived a great life and always had a smile on her face.
Erma, please spend some time on yourself and relax, you sure do deserve it.

Mami, I don't know how you carried on in life the way you did! Loved hearing about the old days and how simple a life you and your family lived and with such big family and only the bare essentials you all had such rich happy lives so full of Love! As such, you brought us up, all eight of us children many months out of many years on your own while Dad traveled back and forth to the states and Puerto Rico as a migrant worker! As a child I never thought of the task at hand you had, caring for us,  handling things at home and also helping and providing for our Grandma, your Mom and at times one of your younger brother. You cooked, washed laundry by hand in that little joyita with barely any water running through it and sometimes even helped gathered the very wood you used to cook! To think that it was the 1940's, 50's and early 60's and we lived in such a primitive way and you did so much work and you never ever complained about a thing in life! In fact I thought as a child that we were so well off because our house was painted, the outhouse had electricity, meaning a wired hanging light and tap water in late 50's. Then talking about the food, how many people did you feed in the 90 years you were capable of making the best rice and beans, pasteles, and rice pudding during the Christmas season to the Dia de los Reyes? Then when we moved to the states your cooking moved on to a whole new level and even tastier meal having at your disposal far more food ingredient than anyone could imagine possible! Thanksgiving, what a feast you always made and come to think of it there was never anyone else in the kitchen but you! You never went to a movie theater until all of us kids were grown up! You never went out dancing except during the holidays when we all went to friends family parties or when you and Dad were the host of such parties and they sure lasted almost all night long! I sometimes long for those days! You cooked and cooked and we had the best ever holiday parties at your house. Again, all that work and you did it all. When the Grandchildren started coming along, that was one of yous greatest joys! Once they started coming there was always one baby or other for you to fuss over from late 1960's when in your 40's to up your age of 85 to 90. Even as the Alzheimer ravaged your mind and body those great grandchildren and great great grandchildren lit up your world! Mami, I know I will never be able to fill your shoes but if I can be half the loving human being you were I will be just as happy because you were one of a kind like no other! I love you, and will miss you! The last memory of you as I walked into the room and saw your face with the life and the Soul already gone from your body it was a shock but a bitter sweet kind of thing because I knew that were now where you needed to be and no more pain! I love you and you will always be in my hear!

What a beautiful woman with many beautiful memories! My prayers and condolences are with you at this hard time Bruni.

Sending love to the entire Hernandez family.  My heart hurts; Mami will always be remembered for her beautiful heart, she showed kindness and love to everyone.  She was a huge part of my upbringing.  I have so many fond memories of her, especially her laughter.  

May God give you strength during this time and know you have a special angel watching over you now!
