Loving wife, mother, nurse, and friend
Margaret M. Hoffman, 85, of Harrisburg, passed away Sunday, October 30, 2011 in William Penn Golden Living Center, Lewistown with her son, Jim, by her side.
She was born June 12, 1926 the daughter of the late Paul D. Watson and Grace Gorsuch Watson.
Known as Peggy, she graduated from Swatara Township High School in 1944 and the Polyclinic School of Nursing in Harrisburg. In her nursing career, she worked at the Polyclinic Hospital, Lewistown Hospital, Sacred Heart Hospital in Norristown, Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill, and retired from nursing from the State Hospital in Harrisburg. While working on the maternity ward, she often commented that she loved working on Christmas so she could be with the newborn babies.
On June 5, 1948, she married her high school sweetheart, Norman E. Hoffman, who passed away in November of 2003. They had six children. She is the mother of four sons and two daughters: Michael D. Hoffman of York; Thomas G. Hoffman, of Pittsburgh; James N. Hoffman and his wife, Maureen of Lewistown; Mary Anne Hoffman of Washington,PA; Barbara J. Rightmyer of Harrisburg, and Mark R. Hoffman and his wife Jeannie of Columbus. She is the beloved grandmother of twelve: Katie Hoffman of Chicago; Ian Hoffman and his wife Beth of York; Lindsay McNary and her husband Tyler of Pittsburgh; Tommy Hoffman Jr. of Boston; Kristina Hoffman, Mitchell Hoffman, Ann Marie Hoffman, and Luke Hoffman, all of Columbus; Veronica Rightmyer who lived with her, Gyver Rightmyer, and Casey Rightmyer and their father, Charles of Frystown. Her grandson Brandon Hoffman is currently serving in Afghanistan. Her sister Polly Freeland and her children survive her. Several members of her husband’s family also survive.
Her parents, her husband, and two infant sons, Jonathan and Charles, precede her in death.
Peggy was Roman Catholic and a member of St. Catherine Laboure’ Parish. She will be remembered most for her feisty spirit and her unending caretaking toward her family, friends, and animals.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, November 3, 2011 at 1:30 PM in St. Catherine Laboure’ Church, 4000 Derry Street, Harrisburg. Friends and family are asked to gather at the back of the church from 1:00 – 1:30 PM. There will be no viewing at Peggy’s request. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery
