Arrangements under the direction of Neill Funeral Home, Harrisburg, PA.Margaret Frances Sludden passed away with her family at her side Friday, April 29, 2011, three months shy of her 99th birthday, bringing a peaceful close to what she described as the best life.
Margaret, known to her friends as Peg, was the third of nine children born to Joseph and Mary Ann Flaherty on August 7, 1912. Joseph and Mary Ann raised their family in Duquesne on a steelworker’s salary. Peg attended nursing school at Pittsburgh Hospital. Soon after she graduated, she went on a blind date with Charles Sludden, who she married on Sept. 2, 1942. Charley was the greatest man she would ever meet.
Peg and Charley raised four children. They moved to Latshmere Manor in 1956, the third house in what was then a new development. Peg lived in the same home, one that never settled, for more than a half-century.
Peg was a faithful Catholic devoted to prayer and providing. She was ever generous, and quick to laugh. Peg is survived by her children, Margaret Frey, Mary Ann Bond, Charles Sludden, Jr., and Elizabeth Sopchak, seven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. She will be buried next to her husband Charley, who she adored to the end.
A visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. and Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 5, 2011 in St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 2800 Paxton Church Rd., Harrisburg.
