He was born in Wilkes-Barre, PA, the son of the late Stanley J. Smith and Helen M. Smith.
He graduated from Plymouth High School in 1949. In 1948, Stan joined the 109th Field Artillery, Pennsylvania National Guard, in Wilkes-Barre, PA. They were activated in 1950 during the Korean Conflict and served in Germany at that time. He was a graduate of the Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He was a past Commander of the 109th Field Artillery in Wilkes-Barre, and retired from the PA Army National Guard in 1985. Upon retirement, he was promoted to the honorary rank of Colonel. He subsequently worked for the PA Horse Racing Commission. Stan was very active in community activities in the Wyoming Valley including being past president of the Rotary Club of Plymouth. He was an avid Philadelphia Phillies fan and enjoyed the outdoors, being an active walker, fisherman, camper, mushroom forager and gardener.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jolene (Mont) Smith, son Jason Smith, daughters Michelle Smith (Loretta Hazinsky) and Lisa Noll (Keith Miller), sister Antonia Metza (Lewis Metza) and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
He was preceded in death by his brother Robert J. Smith.
There will be a private visitation for the family at Neill Funeral Home in Harrisburg, and burial, with military honors, will be held at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
