Walt Clews was my football coach for just one year back in 1976, but he had a significant impact on my life both while I played football and as an adult. Simply put, Coach Clews was my favorite football coach. I was lucky enough to play football for the St. Margaret Mary Spartans from 1973 - 1976. Coach Clews was a legend then and I found out why once I played for him in the fall of 1976. He was instrumental in giving me one of my most fond childhood memories when he asked me to play with the Spartans one last time as we met the Roseland Raiders in a "bowl" game in 1977. What a great experience to be back with that team and Coach Clews is the one who made it happen. I thought of him frequently over the years and even looked him up a few times when I was in college. I even wrote a paper about him when I was a freshman in college. In that paper, I spoke about integrity, hard work, toughness, and sportsmanship. Aside from winning (which we did frequently under Coach Clews), these were the words that best described him. Thanks for the memories, Coach Clews and rest in peace.

Mrs. Clews and family, my heartfelt condolences. Having known him since he and my dad coached together, he was such a wonderful man. I'm sure my dad was there to welcome him home. They now have the best seats in the house for all the football games to come.

What a great man and teacher of young men. I haven't seen Coach Clews in a while, but I'll never forget him and all he did for so many of us who were lucky enough to play for him.

As time passes by and friends get together and reminisce of the times and good memories, Walt's name will always be part of that conversation. Many people respected him as a great friend, outstanding person and the greatest football coach who inspired many, his players, his coaches and the many parents. He will always be in my heart and prayers.

Ms. Wanda, May the Lord strengtheneth and omfort you for such a time as this. When I saw Walt at the Nursing Home a few weeks ago, I didn't know that would be the last time that i'ld see him down here. Be strong in the Lord.
