Bertha Newell Matthews

Mrs. Bertha Newell Matthews, 89, a resident of Harrisonburg and Timberville for the past twenty years, died December 10th, 2012 at Winchester Medical Center where she had been a patient for the past week.

A daughter of the late William and Myrtle Bennett Remphrey, she was born on September 12, 1923 in Elmira, New York and attended schools in New Jersey. She worked at a publishing company in Princeton, NJ, as a proofreader. She and her husband enjoyed retirement in South Carolina and Florida before she moved to Virginia.

Her husband, Charles Matthews, preceded her in death. Surviving is her daughter, Sharon Kyger and husband, Billy of Port Republic, her sister, Mary Hand and husband, Larry, of Luray; and a number of nephews.
