Betty Jo Meyerhoeffer, 101, of Dayton, VA, passed away at her home on Sunday, November 9, 2025, where she had been under the care of her sons and devoted friend and caregiver, Shirley Ann Plaugher since breaking her hip in the summer of 2022.
She was born at Job, WV, Randolph County, on December 29, 1923, and was the daughter of the late William Jennings Bryan and Connie Marie (Heltzel) Warner.
She spent her early childhood in Job with her parents and four siblings. After the death of her father in 1930, she came to Mt. Clinton, VA the following summer to spend time with her great Uncle and Aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Rawley T. Heltzel. Shortly afterwards she was legally adopted by the Heltzels. The family moved to Dayton in the fall of 1937 where she attended school. After graduating from Dayton High School in 1940, she attended Madison College (JMU) for two years.
On September 15, 1942, she married Joe Meyerhoeffer of Dayton, who passed away on June 16, 1990. The Meyerhoeffers were engaged in farming for many years, raising beef cattle and turkeys.
Betty Jo was a member of Harrisonburg First Presbyterian Church where she took a very active part when able. She did volunteer work at the Harrisonburg – Rockingham Historical Society and at the Massanetta Springs Conference Center and was a long-time member of Fort Harrison, Inc.
Surviving are her two sons, Joseph “Jody” H. Meyerhoeffer of Dayton and William “Bill” H. Meyerhoeffer of Bridgewater; her grandson, Michael C. “Chris” Bunt of Richmond, and great grandson, Christopher Devon Bunt of Waynesboro.
In addition to her parents, adopted parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Judith Paige Meyerhoeffer Bunt, on October 6, 2011; her brothers, Veryl F. Bryan J. and Billy H. Warner; her sister, Anna Mary Warner Mick; and her nephew, Wilbert D. “Wil” Mick.
The family will receive friends 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at her late residence.
A graveside service will be 11:00 AM, Thursday, November 13, 2025, at Dayton Cemetery with Rev. Scott Thayer officiating.
Honoring her wishes, she will be cremated.
