Obituary of Charles Allen Slott
Charles Allen (Chuck) Slott , age 71, passed away in his home on August 11, 2018. He was born on February 26, 1947 in Jacksonville, Florida to Louis and Blanche Slott. He graduated from Landon High School, where he was a star football player. He attended the University of South Florida and graduated from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, studying art, after serving in the military during the Vietnam War. He was a active member of Congregation Beth El in Harrisonburg and served on the Beth El board of directors as vice-president. He was a founding member of the Beth El choir, sharing his beautiful bass voice every year at the High Holidays. Chuck was also active in the Beth El men’s club, served on the social action committee, spearheaded the Congregation’s oral history project, helped coordinate the temple’s efforts providing food for the local homeless program, Open Doors. Chuck loved music. He enjoyed playing guitar, singing and writing songs and collecting classic country music albums. His voice was widely recognized in the community, originally from his participation in the locally produced Our Little Radio Show, and later from his role as music announcer for WMRA public radio, eventually becoming the music director for the station. Chuck’s kindness, generosity, class and keen wit were often shared with his many friends, engaging in conversation over coffee or a meal, over the phone, or at his home. Topics ranged from politics and religion to baseball and soul searching, and he was always happy to share a good joke. He is survived by his brother, Marvin Slott and sister, Rene Montaigne and nephew and nieces, Jeffrey Montaigne, Alicia and David Bryant and Erin Slott, and many dear friends. Chuck’s big heart and gentle spirit will be missed by all who knew him. May his memory be for a blessing. Funeral services were held in Jacksonville, Florida. A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held at Temple Beth El, 830 Old Furnace Road, Harrisonburg, on Sunday August 26, at 2 PM. All are welcome to attend. We will continue remembering Chuck at Braithwaite Studios,(where Chuck loved playing and singing), 415 Mason St., Dayton, at 4:30 PM. All are invited and welcome to bring musical instruments.
