Constancio Silva Melo

Constancio Silva Melo, 98, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2026, surrounded by the family he cherished so deeply. Born in his beloved Santo Antão, Cabo Verde, an island off the coast of West Africa, he proudly served his country before moving to Senegal in his twenties. He later immigrated to Boston, MA, alongside his wife, Idalina, and their daughter, Yvette, beginning a new chapter rooted in courage, devotion, and love.

Family was at the center of Constancio’s life. His grandchildren, Amber and Justin—who lovingly knew him as Papa—were his pride and joy and he cherished his son in law, Jeff, with great respect and admiration. Constancio later joined his daughter and her family as they moved to Harrisonburg, VA, where he remained a beloved part of their home and daily lives.

Constancio was a gentle and warm man with a hearty smile that made everyone feel loved. He loved being outside and took great pride in his vegetable garden. He was especially fond of his mint. He tended it carefully and made fresh mint tea to share, often offering it to guests with his familiar question, “Bo cre cha?” — “Do you want tea?” He also found joy in storytelling, whether about historical events or lighthearted, comical moments.

His faith was a quiet and steady presence throughout his life, and “God bless you” as well as “Nosso Pai é um bom Pai” — Our Father is a good Father — were among the phrases he most often shared with those around him. He was also deeply proud of becoming an American citizen.

Caring for others was perhaps the greatest expression of who Constancio was. Throughout the years, he opened his home to others, caring for family and friends and lovingly looked after his grandchildren as they grew up.

Constancio is survived by his daughter, Yvette; his grandchildren, Amber and Justin; his two brothers, Gustavo and Ester, and preceded in death by his wife, Idalina.

Constancio will be remembered for his gentleness, his compassion, his warm smile, his hospitality, and the deep love and faith that guided his life.
