David was the son of Albert and Helen (Trobaugh) Frye, who preceded him in death.
He attended Culpeper County High School (Class of 1957) where he was part of the state champion 4x440-yard relay team his freshman year.
He married Jane Pote in 1963, though the relationship ended in divorce. The couple welcomed sons Curt and Doug, who survive, in 1968.
After a few years in Arlington, VA, David moved to Bridgewater, then settled in Mt. Crawford in 1972. As a single father, David sacrificed much of his free time to ensure his sons were able to participate in sports and other activities year-round. His commitment to his family provided a strong example for Curt and Doug to model as adults. He loved outdoor sports, including running, cycling, canoeing, and kayaking.
David was selfless with his time and energy; always willing to help friends. He was also a volunteer track meet official, including several high school state championship meets. He was also an active member of the Shenandoah Valley Track Club and the Shenandoah Valley Bike Club. In retirement he enjoyed traveling and driving the activities bus for Harrisonburg High School.
David was a man of strong faith. He was a longtime member of Bridgewater Baptist Church and active in the Fellowship of Christian Adult Singles (FOCAS), where he made several lifelong friends.
In addition to his sons Curt (Portland, OR) and Doug (Vienna, VA), David is survived by his sister A. Jeanie Seale (Madison, VA), nephew Jim Seale (Riva, VA), and two grandchildren.

A visitation for David will be held Thursday, March 6, 2025 from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at Lindsey Funeral Homes, 473 S Main St, Harrisonburg, Virginia 22801.
A memorial service will be held 2 pm, Saturday, March 8, 2025, at Bridgewater Baptist Church, 5568 John Wayland Highway, Bridgewater, VA 22812, officiated by Rev. Roger Austin.
