

He was born on September 28, 1929 in Page County and he was raised in the home of Minnie Henderson of Shenandoah.
Slim lived in the Clover Hill area for 55 years. He was employed with Griffith Bag Company and then retired from Reynolds.
He was a member of the citizen band radio community and was known as Honest Slim.
Slim was a member of the band, Big Slim and Page Valley Boys. He got his start in music with Spike and Valley Mae Stroop Band. Big Slim and Page Valley Boys played on WSIG in the mid to late 50’s on Saturday mornings and WSVA TV on Saturday nights with Blaine Smith and Buddy Starcher. Slim’s band played on stage with Patsy Cline in Mt. Jackson.
In 1960, he married Joyce Jenkins, who survives.
Also surviving are three sons and one daughter, David L. McAlister and wife, Karen of Bridgewater, Carlos R. McAlister and wife, Vickie of Union Springs, Marvin L. McAlister and wife, Betty of Harrisonburg, Crystal McAlister of Dayton, a granddaughter, Brittany L. Harper, who was raised in the home, four other grandchildren, Carly Rae and Marcus McAlister of Union Springs, and Ryan and Sara McAlister of Bridgewater; two sisters, Jean McAlister and Edna Comer, and one brother, Melvin McAlister all of Shenandoah.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Hensley, and a brother, Huey McAlister.
Mr. McAlister will be cremated and the family will receive friends 6-8:00 PM, Wednesday, September 22, 2010, at Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.
