Ellen was born on September 17, 1960, in Englewood, New Jersey, to Cecile T. Wright and James Litton Edwards. Her early childhood was marked by both deep love and profound loss when her father, a volunteer firefighter, died heroically in the line of duty in October 1967. After his passing, Ellen and her family moved first to New Hampshire and later to Mesa, Arizona, where she spent her formative years and developed her lifelong love of animals.
She graduated from Mountain View High School in 1979 and, in 1980, moved to West Plains, Missouri, with her mother and two siblings. Guided by her compassion for animals and a desire to serve, Ellen pursued veterinary studies and became a certified veterinary technician. She worked for many years with the Humane Society of Missouri, dedicating herself to the care and protection of animals who had no voice of their own.
Ellen considered her greatest accomplishment to be her daughter, Kelsey Claire Edwards, born in April 2000. Motherhood was the center of her world. She attended every school event and recital, cheered every milestone, and lovingly patched countless skinned knees. Because of her veterinary training, she became the trusted “on-call nurse” not only for her nieces and nephews, but also for neighborhood children, tending to scrapes, scratches, and bruises with calm competence and affection.
Her home was rarely without animals. Over the years she cared for dogs, cats, rats, birds, guinea pigs, rabbits, and any creature that needed nurturing. If something living needed comfort or care, Ellen answered without hesitation.
Despite a long and painful battle with arthritis and joint issues, she remained quick to laugh, ready with a joke, and often the silliest one in the room. She was creative and skilled with her hands, sewing and altering countless dresses, pants, and shirts for the people she loved. Her kindness was steady, her spirit generous, and while she could wield a sharp tongue when necessary, it was always rooted in fierce love.
Ellen touched more lives than she likely ever knew.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James Litton Edwards and Cecile T. Wright; her brother, Wayne Edwards; and her maternal and paternal grandparents.
She is survived by her daughter, Kelsey Claire Edwards of Mt. Crawford; her former husband, James Barker; her brother, Scott Edwards of McGaheysville; her sister, Laura and husband Jeff of Harrisonburg; her niece, Maryellen Bell and husband Justin of Rustburg, Virginia; nephews Zeb Bradley of Waynesboro, Keenan Bradley of Harrisonburg, Nathaniel Bradley of Harrisonburg, Joshua Edwards, and Zachary Edwards; and her brother-in-law, Dewayne Bradley of McGaheysville, Virginia.
