

Eva D. Cougill, 92, passed away Monday, November 26, 2013 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Eva was born in Winchester, Virginia on October 1, 1921 a daughter of the late Carson and Jessie Dyke. Eva graduated from Handley High School. Her studies at Benjamin Franklin University in Washington, D.C. to be a certified public accountant were interrupted when she met and subsequently married her lifelong companion, Clarence Edward Cougill, on February 14, 1947. Clarence the former postmaster of Penn Laird, predeceased her on December 23, 1999. Eva was also predeceased by her brother, Stuart R. Dyke.
Eva was an active member of Asbury United Methodist Church since 1951. She was a past member of the church administrative board, a life member of the United Methodist Women and a member of the Mizpah Bible Class. She was a past president and district director of the Harrisonburg Business and Professional Women’s Club and past president and charter member of the Round Hill Garden Club. She was an active member of the Rockingham Memorial Hospital Auxiliary since 1988, logging in many tireless hours in the blood bank and the cancer center, and she belonged to RMH’s White Rose Giving Circle. Eva was also a charter member of the purple Passion Red Hatters. Eva found great satisfaction in her career as a legal secretary, and she worked for the late William A. Julias for 27 years.
Eva never met a stranger, loved social interactions and had friends in many different arenas. She and Clarence were members of a local square dance club for a number of years. Eva began quilting with friends and made a number of beautiful quilts for her family members. After Eva’s retirement she and Clarence traveled with friends to many destinations including Ireland, England, Alaska, Canada, and cruising in the Carribean. Eva was known for her sharp mend and in her later years she enjoyed spending time daily on her computer reading and sending emails.
Eva is survived by three children: Dr. Susan C. Beverly and her husband Tom of Virginia Beach, John P. Cougill and his wife Alison of Richmond, and Nancy C. Fenton of Harrisonburg. Eva is also survived by four grandchildren, Alex and Whitney Long of Virginia Beach, and Chandler and Cameron Cougill of Richmond.
A memorial service to celebrate Eva’s wonderful life will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at 11:00 am at the Asbury United Methodist Church. A luncheon reception will be held immediately following the service in Slaven Hall at the church. Burial at Eastlawn Memorial Garden will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the Asbury United Methodist Church.
