Born on April 2, 1927 in Rawley Springs Va., she was the daughter of the late Howard and Ella Mae Piner.
She was a devoted wife to her husband of 72 years, Melvin Higgins Sr., who survives, and a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and aunt to her son, Melvin “Mickie” Higgins Jr. (Stephanie); grandchildren Michael Higgins, Leslie Higgins, Jared Higgins (Erica), David Higgins (Julie Campbell) and William Wofter (Corinne Callison); 4 great grandchildren and her niece Susan Claypool (Joe).
She was a faithful, long time member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served her church for many years as a choir director and music leader where she is fondly remembered for her love of hymns and the stories behind them. She also worked at the temple in Washington DC for over 10 years.
Over the years, she and her husband owned a convenience store, restaurant, car lot and a hobby/craft shop where she would teach classes in art, crocheting and macramé.
Services will be held Monday, May 6, 2019, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Harrisonburg, Va. A viewing will be held at 11am followed by the funeral at 12pm. Evalene will be buried at Weavers Cemetery, also in Harrisonburg, Va.
