

She was born on December 15, 1925 in Harrisonburg and was the daughter of the late John and Odessa Baker Clatterbuck.
Gene lived in Harrisonburg her entire life and attended Rockingham County schools. She was a lifetime member of Mt. Sinai United Methodist Church where she held many positions including singing with the choir for 30 years and an active member of the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Salvation Army Ladies Auxiliary.
On November 1, 1947 she married Ralph L. Smith, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Ronald L. Smith and wife, Ruth C., of Woodbridge; a daughter, Cynthia S. Showalter and husband, Steve, of Advance, NC; four grandchildren, Staff Sgt. Adam Showalter of Fayetteville, NC, Elizabeth Schelby of Cordova, TN, Sgt. Joshua Smith of Watertown, NY, and Tyler Smith of Baton Rouge, LA; two step-grandchildren, Stacey Lopez of Woodbridge, and Joshua Holz of Manassas; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Donald B. Clatterbuck and wife, Bonnie, of Harrisonburg; Robert F. Clatterbuck and wife, Gloria, of Lexington, KY; a sister-in-law, Loretta Shultz of Linville; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM, Sunday, February 23, 2014 in the Mt. Sinai Chapel at Vision of Hope United Methodist Church with Rev. David Burch officiating.
The family will receive friends 5-7:00 PM, Saturday, February 22, at VMRC Detwiler Auditorium.
Gene will be cremated and a private burial will be held at a later date.
