

She was the daughter of the late Walter Seitz and Lorena Baker. On April 10, 1953, she went to live with the late Chauncy and Ilva Grieser and was adopted by them on March 13, 1954.
On May 20, 1961 she married William Samuel Shifflett who died on June 9, 1977.
The loves of Hazel’s life were her daughter, Susan Marie Shifflett and granddaughter, Katelyn Starr Hawkins who lived with her. The past seven years, Hazel had been on dialysis and made many friends of the nurses who cared for her and other clients at the dialysis center. In 1968, Hazel and Will became legal guardians of Will’s nephew Rodney Lee Shifflett.
In the late 70’s, she reconnected with her birth family and had many good times with them. Hazel enjoyed doing crafts, making bracelets, and watching soap operas.
In addition to her parents, adopted parents and husband, Hazel was preceded in death by brothers, Oscar Seitz, John Seitz, and Charlie Fitzpatrick; and sister, Mildred Hill.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan Shifflett and friend, Michael Dispanet of Harrisonburg, granddaughter Katelyn Hawkins of Harrisonburg; brothers Hershel Seitz, Reedsville, OH; Russell Seitz, Wellston, OH; Forrest (Brenda) Seitz, Grove City, OH; and Eric Hambrick, West Palm Beach, FL; sisters; Minnie Butts, Wellston, OH; and Cindy (Tom) Ramsey, Oak Hill, OH; adopted sister Judith (Jerry) Kelly, South Webster, OH; adopted brothers, David (Kathleen) Grieser, Wauseon, OH and Dana (Sharon) Grieser, Winston-Salem, NC.
The family will receive friends 6-8:00 PM, Friday, January 6, 2012 at Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.
A funeral service will be held 3:00 PM, Saturday, January 7, at Chapel of the funeral home with Pastor Mark Keller officiating. Burial will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens, Harrisonburg.
