

Jim received a BS in chemical engineering and MS in engineering administration from Case Western Reserve University after which he served in the Army in the Counter Intelligence Corps. Following his military service, he had a successful corporate career. Subsequently, he and his wife, Barbara, owned and managed several small businesses.
After retirement Jim was very active in volunteer activities with several organizations including Valley Voice, Sentara RMH Medical Center, and Habitat for Humanity. He served as an election officer for the City of Harrisonburg, and he was a member of the Electoral Board. Jim was very involved with Kiwanis International serving as past president of the Asheville, NC club, treasurer, past president, and secretary of the Harrisonburg, VA club, and past Divisional Lt. Governor.
Physical activity was an integral part of Jim’s life. He worked out almost daily and enjoyed time spent exercising and being with his gym friends. He also enjoyed Aikido (a martial art), hiking, and fishing.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Barbara Lang Gilchrist.
He is survived by his brother Richard (Gay Lou); daughter, Suzanne (Jon); son, Robert (Karen); four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Jim has requested cremation. Remains are to be interred in Oakland Cemetery, Sandusky, Ohio, in a private graveside service.
