John Allan Sowers

John was born September 16, 1935, in Harrisonburg, he is the son of the late Percey F. Sowers and Catherine Clipp Sowers.

John was preceded in death by Nancy, his wife of 63 years, and his brothers, William and James Sowers.

He is survived by his son, Jay Sowers and his wife, Rachel, of Silverthorne, Colorado, and their children, James and Clare; his daughter, Cathy McLennan and her husband, Cameron of Richmond and their son, Lachlan. He is also survived by nephews and nieces.

John was a lifelong native of Harrisonburg, a graduate of Harrisonburg High School and Randolph-Macon College. He was an active and lifelong member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, serving on the vestry for many years. John joined Valley Finance Service Inc. in 1968. He served as president for over two decades. He is a past president of the Virginia Consumer Finance Association and the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chamber of Commerce. He served as staff sergeant in the Army National Guard. John was also an active member of the Lions Club and a trustee of the Rockingham Public Library.

John was an avid skier and tennis player. He also enjoyed playing golf.

A memorial service will be held at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 660 South Main Street, Harrisonburg at 11:00 am, Saturday, October 10, 2026. The Reverend David Rose will be officiating. Honoring his wishes, he will be cremated and there will be no visitation.
