Larry Quinn Kaylor

July 17, 1950September 7, 2019

Larry Quinn Kaylor died peacefully at his home in Harrisonburg, Virginia on Saturday, September 7, 2019 at the age of 69, after a battle with cancer. He was born July 17, 1950 in Charlottesville, the son of the late Elmer Baxter and Nureta Airey Kaylor.

After graduating from Harrisonburg High School, Larry went on to Emory & Henry College to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Economics in 1972. He then received his Juris Doctorate from T.C. Williams School of Law at University of Richmond in 1977.

L. Quinn, as he was professionally known, began his legal career as an associate at local law firm Wharton, Aldhizer & Weaver. There, he became the Harrisonburg-Rockingham County Department of Social Services’ first counsel, a position he held for nearly 30 years. Throughout his career, Larry most valued providing his support to children and families and made it a focal point of his private practice, which he opened in 1982 and continued until his retirement due to health issues.

Larry was a member of both the Virginia State and the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Bar Associations. For over 35 years, he served as an Advisory Board Member and President of The Salvation Army of Harrisonburg and as a member of the Rotary Club of Harrisonburg.

In his spare time, Larry loved reading, watching golf and solving crossword puzzles. However, most important to him was his family. On September 28, 1985, he married Valerie Wenger Kaylor; they were married for 38 years. A devoted and loving husband, father and friend, he is survived by his daughter Sarah Kathryn Kaylor of New York City. In marrying Val, Larry gained four sisters-in-law: Renee Wenger of Portland, Oregon, Wendy McPherson of Austin, Texas, Dawn Ritchie of Hinton and Tamara Lueth of Harrisonburg.

He is also survived by Jean Litten, who was like a sister to him, and numerous cousins, all from the local area.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 14, 2019 at 11 am at First Presbyterian Church, Court Square, Harrisonburg, VA, with Rev. Scott Thayer officiating. The family will receive friends at 10 am before the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The American Cancer Society, 420 Neff Ave., Suite 210, Harrisonburg, VA 22801, The Salvation Army of Harrisonburg, 185 Ashby Ave., Harrisonburg, VA 22802, or a charity of your choice.

Dear Val,
So sorry to read of Larry's death. I have fond memories of working with you at Dominion Bank - my first "real" job. Larry was helpful on a legal matter. I didn't know him well, but was a gentle man.
Peace to the family and prayers for comfort.

Dearest Valarie,

It is with such sadness in our hearts to hear about Larry. While we have not been around you and your family in several years we have good memories from New York Ave. days. The Kaylors were all such special neighbors. We enjoyed seeing Larry and his parents.
Then he met you Valarie and you two lived a couple blocks away.
Our lives went in different paths from there.
But the past has memories for us of Larry we do treasure.
We send our sympathy to you and your daughter and family.

Larry was an amazing friend. He taught me so many things and helped me become the person and attorney that I am today. He was so bright and so kind to me and i will never forget him.

Dear Family: I remember briefly both Larry and Val when we attended Otterbein UM Church several years ago. I recall he helped greatly when the Church was operating a small after school day care. My wife and I are so sorry about his passing and wished we would have know him better. Our sincerest sympathies and condolences to his wife, daughter, and family.
May God provide you healing, comfort, and wonderful memories of Larry.

Very saddened to hear about Larry's passing. We grew up in the same part of Harrisonburg and were both members of the 1968 class at HHS. Larry was a good guy. Enjoyed playing lots of tennis with him at the Willow Street tennis courts. Larry and his family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

We were "handed over" to Larry to help us with some legal matters when our cousin Dave O'Donnell became a judge. We had meetings in his office, at Golden China to review papers before dinner, and at his home when it was easier for him to see us there. We are so grateful for his advice and guidance as we worked our way through several real estate investments. Many happy discussions of HHS memories, his family and ours (especially when his sweet Sarah arrived), and Kwan's fabulous meals were always large portions of any meeting with Larry and Val. We will miss knowing that he is only a phone call away. Another dear friend's memorial is Saturday so we will be unable to attend Larry's service, but we send our condolences, our love, and a special hug for Larry's women.
