Naomi Catherine "Cupie" Tusing Shifflett

Naomi Catherine “Cupie” Tusing Shifflett, 90, widow of Ernest Shifflett, Sr., who was a former Assistant Fire Chief in Harrisonburg, passed away on Sunday, June 14, 2015 at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born February 6, 1925 in Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late John Henry and Susan Simmers Tusing.

On August 21, 1942 she married Ernest H. Shifflett, Sr., who preceded her in death on March 11, 1999.

Cupie was a member of Hose Co. #4 Auxiliary, Auxiliary to the Virginia State Firefighters Association, and Victory Fellowship Church. She retired from Metro Pants Factory in 1990, and after retirement enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by one daughter, Nancy Shifflett Puffenbarger; two sons, Ernest Howard Shifflett, Jr. and wife, Sandy, and Larry Wayne Shifflett and wife, Pat, all of Harrisonburg; two granddaughters who were raised in the home, Cathy Grogg and Tina Puffenbarger; other grandchildren include, Lee Shifflett, Carol Stickley, David Shifflett and Scott Morris, all of Harrisonburg, and Teri Bosley of Dayton; great-grandchildren, Trevor, Preston, Austin, and Lydia Grogg, Drew Bowman, Matthew and Meaghan Shifflett, Breanna and Allison Bosley, Jordan and Jacie Stickley; great-great-granddaughter, Avery Atkinson-Grogg; sister, Ruth Nutter of Florida; a number of nieces and nephews; and special friends, Janice Lokey, Carolyn Landis, Katherine Sencindiver and Georgia Baker.

Besides her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by three brothers, Wilson H. Miller, Paul and Owen Tusing; and four sisters, Sally Snell, Edna Ritchie, Jane Brown and Rachel Burgoyne.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 pm on Wednesday, June 17, 2015 at Victory Fellowship Church, 3160 Limestone Lane, Dayton, VA 22821.

Funeral services will be held at the church on Thursday, June 18, 2015 at 2:00 pm with Pastor W.L. “Sonny” Henkel officiating. Burial will follow at Woodbine Cemetery.
