A daughter of the late James Creed and Bertha Byers Helmick, she was born on February 6, 1939 in Short Gap, West Virginia.
Violet attended schools in Ridgeley, West Virginia and was later employed in the housekeeping department at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
She enjoyed word search puzzles, stuffed animals and her faith in the Lord.
Violet was married to Weldon Lee James, who preceded her in death.
Surviving are one daughter, Elizabeth James, of Virginia Beach, four sons, Greg Nester, Ronald, Andy and Ray James, all of Harrisonburg; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She will be cremated and all services will be private.
