The service celebrating the life of Alma Blake Whitaker will be held at Hill Crest Memorial Chapel at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 with visitation beginning at 12:30 pm until service time. Pastor Calvin Hubbard of Barksdale Baptist Church will officiate. Alma went home to be with the Lord on May 15, 2011. She was born March 3, 1920 in Wilmington, North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest H. Whitaker, Jr. with whom she celebrated nearly 60 years of marriage at the time of his death in December 2001, and seven siblings. She is survived by her five children: Merry Jones and husband, Leo of Haughton, LA; Ron Whitaker of Bossier City, LA; Stephen Whitaker of Blanchard, LA; Gay Hutter and husband Mike of Orlando, FL; and Andrea Lasseter and husband Tom of New Port Richey, FL. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, who were the light of her life.
Alma accompanied Ernest on many military assignments during his career in the U.S. Air Force, but also steadfastly carried on when unable to accompany him. Her highest honor was fulfilling God’s plan as a wife and mother. She was totally devoted to the care and nurture of her family, always putting others first and demonstrating the love of Jesus. She treasured her music and later in life, discovered the joy of painting. She found great satisfaction in home decorating, gardening and tending to her roses.
Internment at Glen Haven Cemetery in Winter Park, FL will follow graveside services led by the Pastor Rod Pender of Woodbury Presbyterian Church, in Orlando, FL on Saturday, May 21, 2011 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Franklin Graham’s Samaritan Purse, http://www.samaritanspurse.org/, the American Red Cross, http://www.redcross.org, or the charity of your choice.
