Charles Alan “Al” Newsom was born on August 23, 1959, and went to his heavenly home on October 23, 2024. He was 65 years old. Al’s parents were Rev. Warren Aubrey Newsom and Sue Patsy Tolar Newsom Carter.
Al was a 1978 graduate of Jonesboro-Hodge High School and was a contributing member of the J-H Tigers football program. He later joined the U.S. Army and deployed to Italy. While there, he represented the Army in the boxing ring, having successful matches all around Europe. After returning to the States, Al was hired as a truck driver by the Holsum Bread Company, where he spent many years delivering food products to various locations in Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi. Health issues caused him to leave his professional driving career, but he continued to work in other capacities. His later years were spent caring for his mom, from taking her to all her appointments to visiting every restaurant in town. He was happy to be “driving Miss Patsy.”
In his free time, Al enjoyed fishing, reading, and watching sports. He loved spending time with his nieces and nephews by attending their ball games, occasionally challenging them to a game of ‘horse’ or ‘one-on-one,’ or simply having a quick chat whenever he could. And when any of them had a birthday or special occasion, he loved to slip them a little cash or a thoughtful note.
Most importantly, Al loved Jesus. He constantly read Christian books, listened to Christian music and sermons, and was faithful to take his mother to church every Sunday. As he faced ever increasing challenges during recent years, he remained adamant that God was going to heal him. Completely. And He did.
Al is preceded in death by his father, Rev. Warren Aubrey Newsom, and brother Warren Dale Newsom.
He is survived by his mother, Patsy Tolar Newsom Carter; two sisters, Anna Beth Crowson (Joel) of Haughton, LA, and Lori Newsom of West Monroe, LA; nieces, Joanna Crowson Mangum (Chris), Whitney Crowson, Meredith Crowson, Nichol Cruz, and Andrea Dark; nephews, Jessie Newsom (Kisha), Wesley Newsom, and Zachary Newsom (Keeleigh); and many great-nieces and -nephews.
Services will be held at Hill Crest Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 29, 2024. Visitation is at 9:00 a.m., followed by a celebration of his life at 10:00 a.m., officiated by Dr. Gevan Spinney, Pastor of First Baptist Church, Haughton, LA. A short graveside service will follow.
Pallbearers: Dakota Armour, Jessie Newsom, Wesley Newsom, Zachary Newsom, Ritchie Tolar, and Kevin Quarles.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Missions Ministry of First Baptist Church, Haughton, LA.
