

Mable "Dell" Crew Steadman, born on April 16, 1939, in Shreveport, Louisiana, spent most of her childhood and adult life in Haughton, Louisiana. She graduated from Haughton High School in 1957 and later earned a Bachelor's degree from Louisiana Tech University. Despite teaching all day, she managed to attend Northwestern State University on weekends and after night classes to pursue her Master's degree in Education.
Throughout her academic journey, she also accumulated several credits while working towards her plus 30.
Dell was an avid reader and a strong advocate for education. She instilled these values in her students and inspired many to achieve their goals. Over the past thirteen years, she resided with her niece and husband in Texas and later in Arkansas.
Dell was employed as a teacher and librarian for the Bossier Parish School System. She later worked for the Bossier Parish Library. She was a member of Southern Methodist Church in Haughton for many of her early adult years.
Dell was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Steadman; her parents, Margaret Pursley and Jesse Crew; her stepfather, D.J. Pursley; her sister, Lola Horton; her nephew, David Horton (whom she raised); and her sister-in-law, Allora Crew Couture.
Dell's greatest love and role in life was that of a grandmother. She was affectionately known as "Nanny" to her grandchildren.
Dell is survived by her brother, Joe Henry Crew, and his daughter, Dr. Crystal Finnegan, along with her husband, Jimmy Finnegan, who reside in North Carolina; sister-in-law, Sue Novotny, S.C., daughter-in-law, Susan Horton, nephew, Tommy Horton of Haughton, niece, Delores "Dee" Horton Bodin, and son-in-law, John Bodin of AR.
She fulfilled the role of grandmother to Brandon Horton, Ashley Horton Lopez, Shannon Horton Stevens, Jennifer Bodin Mendez, Sarah Bodin Poyet, Lana Bodin, Parker Bodin, Ainsley Condit Swartz and Cameron Condit. Great-grandchildren include Kennedy Horton, Charli and Codi Mendez, Auguste Poyet, Violet and Levi Lopez, Lenni and Maris Stevens, and Josephine Condit.
Visitation will be Sunday, March 15, 2026 from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm at Hill Crest Memorial Chapel. A graveside service will be held 10:00 am on Monday, March 16, 2026 at Hill Crest Memorial Park.
