Edna Margaret Zirkle, 91 passed away on Friday, June 24, 2022, peacefully at her home in Haughton LA, while taking a nap. She was born December 26, 1930, in Victoria Texas to Lad & Ida Slavik. She graduated high school from Victoria High, in 1949, then went on to study Accounting at Victoria Jr. College. She married the love her life, Robert C. Zirkle, May 16, 1953. They loved each other beyond measure. Together they embarked on a journey of military life taking them to Japan, Virginia, and ultimately to Barksdale AFB, which led to Haughton LA, being their permanent home. Edna worked many years as a Bookkeeper in Bossier City. All of that of course changed, when in February 1967, they welcomed their only child Michael Zirkle. To say that he became the center of her world, would be an understatement.
Edna was devoted to her Catholic faith. She devoted many years of service to Christ the King Catholic Church, and the Louisiana Catholic daughters. She took her duties very seriously. She had her own processes, or as we like to call it the “Edna Way”. As long, as you did things her way, it would be alright, if not, well let’s just say there were consequences.
Mom never met a stranger. She loved to chat and engage with people. She often shared stories, but we all understood they might be slightly “Edna Edited”. Mom loved the outdoors, water, the beach (she adored having a great tan), and really any place warm. She looked forward to their yearly trips to Florida, where she could soak up all the sun rays! Edna had many lifelong precious friendships. She was named God Mother to so many over the years and loved each one as her own.
Edna is survived by her devoted husband of 69 years, Robert C. Zirkle. Her only child Michael C. Zirkle, and his wife Shannon. Along with numerous Nieces, Nephews, Cousins and God Children.
The family would like to express sincere thanks, to Ricky Buchannan for all the projects he completed to make the house easier to navigate for Mom. Also, Ruth Burks who has been Mom & Dad’s caregiver these last several months. Father Fidel, for coming to the house to visit her, and give communion, when she could no longer make it to mass each week. And of course, Roxie Kennon who they love, and always keeps 136 Platt, smelling pine-sol fresh.
Services will be held Wednesday, June 29th, at Christ the King Catholic Church, in Bossier City LA. Visitation will be 9:30am-10:30am, with Rosary led by the Knights of Columbus. Funeral Mass will start at 11:00am led by Monsignor Provenza, and Father Fidel. Burial will follow at Hill Crest Cemetery in Haughton LA.
