Jay was a Vietnam veteran while in the Navy and remained in the Army National Guard until his retirement. Jay was affectionally known as “Baby Duck” in the Navy because of his small stature and he was an excellent swimmer. He was also a dealer for Isle Capris Casino for over 15 years. He really enjoyed playing, as well as dealing cards. He loved his family, especially his grandkids. He was a fan of the New Orleans Saints and the LSU tigers, but if you knew him, his favorite sport was fishing, smoking Marlboros, and drinking Budweisers.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Lois Keenan; his son, Gerald Jay ‘Jerry’ Meyer Jr.; and brothers, Tom, Jim, Jody, and Dean.
Jay is survived by his loving wife, Chris Hughes; children, Kimberly Meyer, Brian Hughes (Kirsti), Spencer Hughes (Nina Doig), Stephanie Anderson (Anthony), Raven Hart (Greg) and Ryan Hughes (Candice); 16 grandchildren; sister, Lesa Grieder (Bryon); brother, Donnie Keenan (Teresa) and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and good friends.
Services for Jay Hughes will be at Beulah Land Baptist Church (3179 Sligo Rd, Haughton, LA 71037) on February 10, 2022. Time of service to be 2:00pm CST.
Interment will be held at Northwest Louisiana Veteran’s Cemetery in Keithville, La. at a later date.
The family would like to thank Dr. Matthew Hefner and Dr. Thomas Rodsuwan for their kind and compassionate care and bedside manner while Jay was inpatient at Willis Knighton Bossier. We would also like to thank the many nurses and techs for their excellent care while on the Med/Surg unit.
Memorial contributions may be made to Operation Home Front. Jay truly had a heart for his country and was proud of the military he served.
