

SHREVEPORT, LA – Helen Ruth Sanders, age 81, passed away peacefully at the Stratmore Nursing Home on Tuesday, September 30, 2014, devoted wife of 60 years to Edgar G. Sanders, who survives her. She enjoyed many years as a military spouse traveling extensively with him while he was a United States Air Force pilot. They resided in Shreveport after his retirement in 1970. She was a beloved employee of Caddo Magnet High School for 15 years.
Born on June 19, 1933 to the late Corbie Iverson Vance and Chloe Adkins Vance, she grew up in Martin, LA, moving to Shreveport with her parents and siblings in 1949. She was preceded in death by her brothers Billy Malone and C.I. “Buster” Vance as well as her sister-in-law Donna Vance and brothers-in-law W.O. “Bill” Thomas and W.L. Harrison.
A loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she leaves behind her only child, Tony Sanders, his wife Dorothy Taylor Sanders, granddaughter Leah Shiels and husband Gene Shiels, step-grandchildren Kathryn Taylor and Kristin Taylor, and two great-grandchildren, Amelia Claire Shiels and Hattie Taylor Lattore. Helen also leaves a large number of family to cherish her memory: Carlton and Lois Vance of Pineville, LA, Bertha Thomas of Shreveport, LA, Betty Harrison of Greenville, SC, Mack Vance of Grand Cane, LA, Glen and Mary Jane Vance of Shreveport, LA and Mary and Dr. Steve Smith of Shreveport, LA.
Friends and family are invited to a memorial service for Helen at 3:00 PM Sunday, October 5, 2014, at Hill Crest Memorial Funeral Home in Haughton, LA. Officiating will be Helen’s brother, Rev. Carlton Vance. Visitation will be held prior to the service at the funeral home from 2:00 to 3:00 PM.
