James Harlow Vaughan, age 84, of Haughton, Louisiana, passed away peacefully after a series of recent illnesses on April 26, 2026.
Harlow was born on January 21, 1942, in Cowan, Tennessee, to Odes and Evelyn (Partin) Vaughan. He came to Louisiana after enlisting in the United States Air Force and being stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base.
Louisiana was the hottest place he had ever been. He could not wait to return to cooler weather, but he met the love of his life, Rebecca “Becky” (Fields) Vaughan. Needless to say, he stayed.
For nearly all of their 61 years of marriage, Harlow and Becky made their home in Haughton.
After his military service, Vaughan became a respected tool-and-die maker at Western Electric, where he worked for many decades.
He was also a small-business owner; his company, AAA Woodcraft in Shreveport, specialized in wooden stakes, pallets, and custom wood products.
Throughout his life, Harlow remained deeply involved in his community. He volunteered with Boy Scout Troop 227 while his sons were in scouting and continued his service after retirement at the Haughton Food Bank, where he could be found every Monday and Thursday morning until very recently.
Many local residents who never learned his name simply knew him as “the Food Bank Man.”
He was preceded in death by his parents, Odes and Evelyn Vaughan; his brother, Johnny Vaughan; his infant son, Terry Vaughan; and his infant grandsons, Walker and Austin Vaughan.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Becky (Fields) Vaughan; his brother, Billy Vaughan, and wife Carolyn; his sons, Jimmy Vaughan and Chris Vaughan and wife Kathryn; his grandchildren, Becca Doran and husband Brendon, Sarah Vaughan, Connor Vaughan, and Carson Vaughan; and his great-granddaughter, Hailey Doran.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at Hillcrest Funeral Home and Cemetery in Haughton, Louisiana. The funeral service will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 8, 2026, followed by a graveside service, both at Hillcrest Funeral Home and Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Haughton Food Bank officially named, A.C.T.I.O.N. (Area Churches Together in Our Neighborhood) c/o Haughton Baptist Church.
