Jerry was born in Minden, Louisiana, on June 20, 1943, to Perry and Willa Mae Fowler. He attended schools in Minden, Lubbock, Texas; Bethany, Louisiana; and Doyline, Louisiana. He graduated from Byrd High School in Shreveport, Louisiana. In his younger years, while living in Doyline, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and riding his special horse, "Midnight," in parades and grand entries at rodeos.
He attended Northwestern State University, where he received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees, along with 45 hours above his Master's degree. He also attended Louisiana Tech University and Louisiana State University for additional graduate work.
He met Donella, who would later become his wife of 57 years, at the famous Kokomo Drive-In in Bossier City on April 1, 1962. They were married on December 20, 1962. He started his teaching career in Houma, Louisiana. From there he moved to the Bossier School System, where he served as a teacher, coach, Federal Programs Coordinator, and principal for 42 years.
After retiring from Bossier, he taught and served as assistant baseball coach at Grawood School in Shreveport. From there he moved to the Catholic School System as a teacher at Christ the King School. He was later appointed principal there, becoming the only non-Catholic principal in the Diocese. He then returned to Bossier, teaching at Butler and Haughton Middle School.
Jerry was very active in sports programs throughout Bossier Parish. He was elected the first president of the Bossier Dixie Baseball Association and coached very successfully in the
Bossier Parish football and basketball programs. He also served on the Bossier YMCA Board of Directors.
For 20 years, he served as the Bossier School Board's representative on the Cypress Black Bayou Recreation and Water Conservation District Board, where he served two terms as president.
