John proudly served his country by flying helicopters during the Vietnam War. Outside of his service, John found joy in the simple things in life. He loved playing guitar and singing, playing poker with friends, and spending time with his sister playing cards and board games. He also had a deep love for fishing, a passion that brought him peace and happiness. In keeping with that love, one of his last requests was simply to go fishing.
He survived by his sisters, Emily Lowry and Dee Phillips; sons, George McLaughlin and Brad McLaughlin; daughter, Teresa; six grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his father, Chester McLaughlin; mother, Alpha Omega Martin; brother-in-law, U.C. Lowry; two children; three sisters, and five brothers.
