John William McRae, 83, went to be with the Lord on September 18, 2025, in Shreveport, Louisiana. Born on January 28, 1942, in Cleremont, Florida, he was a devoted husband, father, and friend who brought joy and laughter to all who knew him.
John served in the Navy starting in 1959, dedicating 1 year of his life to serving his country with honor. After his military service, he embarked on a successful career as a machinist, specializing in pump repair for large papermill companies, which took him across the country. His career spanned over 55 years, and he also worked as a salesman in the southeast U.S. for 20 years, sharing his expertise and forming lasting relationships in the industry.
John was married to Nita McRae for 62 incredible years. His life was enriched by his deep love for his family and his passions. An avid fisherman, he taught all his children to fish, sharing with them not just the skill but also the patience and tranquility that come with it. He was also an enthusiastic golfer and a fervent supporter of the LSU Tigers and the New Orleans Saints.
A master of the games Domino and Rook, John enjoyed playing with family and friends, often bringing people together for a game night. His love for great food was evident in his special burgers and steaks, and he cherished the times spent grilling and enjoying home-cooked meals, especially oysters.
John is survived by his children, Ricky (Cheryl), Steve (Ruth), Brandi and Danielle, along with a sister Ann McRae.
John was a loving grandparent and great-grandparent. He is survived by 9 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren with 3 more on the way.
John was preceded in death by his parents, William Henry and Louise McRae, sisters; Mary Sands and Jeannie McGinnis. His legacy of love, laughter, and dedication to his family and friends will live on through those he has left behind.
The family will be receiving guests for visitation on Sunday, September 21, 2025, from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the stateroom of Hill Crest Memorial Funeral Home, 601 Hwy 80, Haughton, Louisiana 71037.
There will be a Celebration of Life service for John on Monday, September 22, 2025, at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Hill Crest Memorial Funeral Home, with his grandson Thomas McRae officiating.
Interment will immediately follow on the grounds of Hill Crest Memorial Park, Haughton, Louisiana.
To serve as pallbearers are, Josh McRae, Thomas McRae, Jacob McRae, Daniel McRae, John McRae and Blake Jorgens.
John lived a full, healthy life and went peacefully at his home of 40 years, surrounded by the memories and people he loved. His life and legacy will be remembered and cherished by all who loved him.
