Kenneth Wayne Maxey, 62, of Haughton, Louisiana passed into the loving and healing arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on September 11, 2021. He was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on August 25, 1959. He proudly grew up and lived in Haughton his entire life where his father was Mayor for many, many years. Kenneth graduated from Haughton High School in 1977, where he was an exceptional student and athlete in baseball, football and track. After that he attended Centenary College in Shreveport on a baseball scholarship. He then went to work for his father Billy Joe’s company, Carney Printing Co., for the next 30 years until the company was sold. Kenneth spent the remainder of his career working at Covington Co., Inc. until his very recent retirement.
Kenneth was a proud member of First Baptist Church Haughton (formerly Haughton Baptist Church) his entire life. He was also a member of Haughton Masonic Lodge #95 for 4 decades and had proudly and humbly served in all offices. He was a member of Scottish Rite and Shriners where he continued to support Shriners Hospital up until his passing.
Kenneth had many hobbies, but enjoyed none more than fishing, hunting and spending time in his garden. He also loved watching LSU and Saints football and old re-runs of Western shows and movies that he’d already seen hundreds of times before. Anytime you went to his house there was no question what his TV was going to be on. He enjoyed all these activities very much, but he loved them the most when done with his beloved family.
Kenneth, or “Poppy”, as he was so very affectionately referred to by his grandkids and kids, was loved, adored, and cherished by so many. He truly never met a stranger. It’s often said that people with huge and caring hearts would give a person the shirt off their back, but Kenneth literally would, and did, anytime he heard there was someone in need – whether he knew them or not. He would work tirelessly to raise a garden every Spring and Fall with his granddaughter just to turn around and give it all away to others. Kenneth was also an avid donator to various non-profits such as Shriners Hospital, St. Jude’s and Wounded Warrior Project. That’s what made him the happiest – helping, giving, and loving on others.
Kenneth had so many beautiful and amazing qualities about him which are too abundant to mention in this brief time, but we would be remiss if we did not reiterate and emphasize just how incredibly loving, selfless, caring, giving, smart, witty, and funny he was. He would always tell the best jokes, and flawlessly at that, always nailing the punchlines perfectly. His impersonations were impeccable, with none being better than his spot-on impersonation of his late Uncle Doodlum. Anytime you needed a laugh or a helping hand, Kenneth was always going to be there for you.
Kenneth, or “Poppy”, was such an amazing, beautiful, talented, and humble man. He never knew just how special he was to us all, but he truly was the best of the best. We miss him so incredibly much already and will cherish and love him and his memory every single day until we see him again in Heaven.
Preceding Kenneth in death are his grandparents Roy and Janie Maxey, Carson and Henrietta McLemore and his father, Billy Joe Maxey.
Kenneth is survived by his mother, Catherine Maxey; son, Phillip Wayne Maxey and wife Katie; daughter, Jamie Lyn Harris and husband Paul; sister, Brenda Bramlett and husband Larry; and grandchildren, Karlie Beth Maxey, Annalyn Harris and Parker Harris.
Honoring Kenneth as pallbearers are Mike Covington, Jed Dunigan, Richard Martin, Greg McCarty, Mitch Meyer, Johnny Rhodes and Tommy Strawn.
Memorial contributions may be sent to First Baptist Church Haughton, Shriners Hospital or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
