

Major (Ret.) Leslie (Les) Baxter Williams, Jr., passed away on Monday, July 18, 2011, after a brave three year battle with cancer. Les was born October 28, 1929, at the Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C. to parents, Leslie Baxter and Dovie B. Williams. He spent his childhood in Tennessee and entered into military service upon his high school graduation in 1947. He retired from the U.S. Air Force at Barksdale Air Force Base in July 1967. He enjoyed his continued involvement with the B-52 Association. He later worked for the Louisiana State Employment Office in Shreveport, retiring in 1987.
He was especially proud to be an honorary member of the Bossier Sheriff’s Posse & Auxiliary where he volunteered much of his time to help serve and protect the citizens of Bossier Parish. He was the 2009 Veteran’s Day Honoree at Caddo Magnet High School.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Dolly Webb Williams; and four grandsons. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, June Williams.
Les was proud of his family including his children: Shirley Holt and husband, Mike; Mary Bass and husband, Jimmy; John Williams and wife, Lori; Peggy Spilker and husband, Steve; Virginia Short and husband, Max; Rita Williams and husband, Richard Muslow; Jane Turner and husband, T; Barbara Simms and husband, John; Janet Bouso and husband, Tony; Steve Williams and wife, Karen; Mike Williams and wife, Christa; Linda Roach and husband, Dennis; James Williams and wife, Cindy; and Betty Brown and husband, Billy. Additionally he is survived by his stepchildren: Steve Grayson and wife, Cathie; Linda Bernstein and husband, Henry; Leslie Grayson, and wife Mary; and Annette Lowey and husband, Dale; as well as 49 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren.
Friends are welcome from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hill Crest Funeral Home in Haughton, LA. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 20, 2011, at 10 a.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church in Bossier City, LA. Graveside services will follow at Hill Crest Memorial Park in Haughton, La.
