Linda was born on February 24, 1945, to I.T. and Marguerite Merritt. As the daughter of a military father, she spent her childhood traveling the world and attended twelve different schools. Those experiences gave her a love for people and adventure, but they also inspired her greatest dream—to one day put down roots and build a lasting home and community of her own.
On March 30, 1968, she married the love of her life, John Floyd Stuart. Together they built a beautiful life over 58 years of marriage, first in Plaucheville, where they lived for 19 years while raising their family, and later in Haughton, which they proudly called home for the past 38 years.
Linda dedicated 33 years of her life to teaching, touching the lives of countless students with her patience, encouragement, and unwavering belief in every child's potential. Beyond the classroom, she also taught swimming lessons, helping generations of children gain confidence and life skills.
Her greatest joy, however, was her family. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and an extraordinary grandmother. Linda faithfully cheered from the sidelines at countless basketball, softball, baseball, wrestling, and, in recent years, pool matches. She never missed an opportunity to support those she loved. She treasured every moment with her eight grandchildren, delighting in reading with them, shopping—especially for them—and creating memories they will carry forever.
Linda's faith was the cornerstone of her life. She faithfully served her church in many capacities, including the United Methodist Women, serving on numerous church boards, teaching Sunday School, and directing Vacation Bible School. Her servant's heart and steadfast faith were evident in everything she did.
She also enjoyed life's simple pleasures and treasured the friendships she built over the years. Whether she was playing Pokeno, Bunco, Mexican Train, participating in the Red Hat Society, or enjoying what seemed like an endless number of Skip-Bo games, Linda's laughter and welcoming spirit brought people together.
She was known as an exceptional cook, although her family lovingly joked about her famously overdone "Linda Toast"—a lighthearted memory that will continue to bring smiles for years to come.
Those who knew Linda will remember her as kind, generous, warm-hearted, and endlessly compassionate. She had an extraordinary ability to see the good in everyone. Her grace, gentle spirit, and unconditional love left an unforgettable mark on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Linda was preceded in death by her parents, I.T. and Marguerite Merritt.
She leaves behind her beloved husband John Stuart; her four children, Laura (Martin), Julie (John), Jason (Meredith), and Linette (Margaret); her eight cherished grandchildren – William, Marisa, Alana, Jaden, Simeon, Merritt, Levi and Marley; and numerous cousins, siblings-in-law, her treasured church family, and many dear friends who were blessed by her love and friendship throughout her 81 years.
Linda's legacy is one of faith, family, kindness, and unwavering love. She taught by example that a life well-lived is measured not by accomplishments alone, but by the hearts touched along the way. Though she will be deeply missed, her love, wisdom, and gentle spirit will live on in the lives of all who knew her.
Visitation will be held at Hill Crest Memorial Chapel Wednesday, June 24, 2026, beginning at 10:00 am. A Celebration of Life will follow at 11:00 am with interment at Hill Crest Memorial Park.
