Mary “Monk” Underwood Anderson," 61, passed away Tuesday, August 8, 2016 following a lengthy battle with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The family will host a Home Going Service at Hill Crest Funeral Home in Haughton, Louisiana on Friday, August 12 at 2:00 P.M. Rev Donnie Underwood of the First Pentecostal Church of Arcadia, Louisiana will officiate the service.
Mary was born in Shreveport, Louisiana and resided in North Bossier, where she was a graduate of Airline High School.
The greatest loves of Mary’s life were her boys and she was devoted to them. Mary’s brother ‘Butch’ often picked at Mary, as each of her boys were growing up, with a funny retort that only Butch could get away with whenever one of her boys came into the room: "Uh oh, here comes Momma’s little baby." This saying continues to this day, though they are all grown men.
Mary fought a courageous battle for the past three years against COPD and was recently reminded by her nephew, Donnie that despite her inability to speak beyond shallow whispers, that all she had to do was simply ‘think’ the name of Jesus. Monk knew that just the simple thought of His name would bring comfort. Indeed, in her time of physical crisis, it was made clear by her barely audible whispers that Jesus was on her mind.
Mary is survived by her sons: Christopher Long and wife Lisa of Derby, Kansas; Terry Long and wife Shaylon of Bossier City, Louisiana; Jason Harris and wife Cindy of Bossier City, Louisiana; and Colby King of Bossier City, Louisiana. She was very proud of her grandchildren Harlie Long, CJ Long and Jordan Long. Mary is also survived by four siblings: Margie Livingston, Vicki Turnage, Ray Underwood, Jr. and Jimmie Underwood. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a multitude of friends also mourn her death.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Underwood Sr. and Brother Donnie Underwood.
You left us way too early. We were not prepared to see you go, but our love is a forever love and this one thing we know - though today our hearts are heavy, the memories we’ve shared will remain our eternal joy.
