It is with profound sadness and deep love that we announce the passing of Michael Lee McHan, born on June 13, 1964, in Haynesville, Louisiana, to Lee Roy McHan and Patsy McHan.
Mike was a devoted husband, loving father, cherished “Pops”, brother, uncle, coach, and faithful friend. For 34 years, he shared a beautiful marriage with his beloved wife, Melanie McHan, and together they built a life and home in Haughton, Louisiana, centered on faith, family, and unconditional love.
Mike was a lifelong sports enthusiast whose love for athletics began at an early age. While he enjoyed all sports, football held a special place in his heart. As a standout quarterback for Haughton High School, Mike’s talent and dedication earned him an athletic scholarship to Northwestern State University, where he continued his football career and built lifelong friendships. Above all he was an avid Dallas Cowboys Fan and never missed the chance to watch a game. Many Sunday afternoons were spent huddled around the TV watching “his Cowboys” with his family.
Although he loved competing, Mike found even greater joy on the sidelines as a coach and mentor. Known to countless young athletes as "Coach Mike," he had a unique ability to recognize each player's strengths and help them find their place on the team. He balanced encouragement with accountability, offering the tough love needed to build both character and confidence. His players knew he expected their best because he genuinely cared about their success, both on and off the field.
Mike dedicated many years to coaching youth sports through BPAR Football, but he became especially known for the championship baseball teams he helped lead in Haughton Little League and Bossier Dixie Baseball. Under his guidance, teams achieved success on the field while creating friendships and memories that would last a lifetime. Some of Mike's happiest moments were spent traveling with players, families, and friends to tournaments across the South. The long drives, weekends at the ballpark, hard-fought games, and celebrations afterward became cherished memories for everyone who was fortunate enough to share them.
Above all his accomplishments, Mike's favorite role was being "Pops." Nothing brought him greater joy than cheering on his grandchildren in everything they pursued. Whether it was softball, baseball, soccer, flag football, basketball, dance recitals, or choir performances, if one of his grandchildren was participating, “Pops” was there. He rarely missed an opportunity to sit in the stands, cheer from the sidelines, or beam with pride from the audience. His unwavering support and presence meant the world to his grandchildren, who always knew they could count on seeing “Pops” cheering them on.
Mike's greatest pride and joy was his family. He was the proud father of seven children: Ashley Council and husband Tim; Alex Person and husband John David; Tyler McHan and wife Holli; Taylor McHan and wife Kati; Luke McHan and wife Lara; Logan McHan and wife Claire; and Mason McHan and wife Danni. He poured his heart into each of his children, offering steadfast support, wisdom, and encouragement throughout their lives.
Mike treasured every moment spent with his grandchildren. He leaves behind his beloved grandchildren: Analese, Andrew, John Kenner, Emery Kate, Knox, Anna Claire, Cooper, Molly, and Mac, along with Isabelle Taylor expected to arrive in December. His grandchildren were the light of his life, and the memories they shared with him will be cherished forever.
Mike is proceeded in death by paternal grandparents Dorthy and Roy McHan and maternal grandmother Dorthy Malloy and his father LeeRoy McHan. Mike is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Melanie McHan; his children and their spouses; his grandchildren; his mother, Patsy McHan; his sister, Sharon Craig and husband Dean; his brother, Patrick McHan and wife Bridget; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members in Arkansas, California and Texas and dear friends.
Mike's greatest legacy will live on through his children and grandchildren. He taught his family the value of hard work and unconditional love. Through both his words and his example, he showed them that life is not always easy, but that challenges can be overcome when faced together. He instilled in those he loved the strength to keep moving forward, the courage to face adversity, and the faith to trust that brighter days lie ahead. His family will forever carry the lessons he taught, the values he lived by, and the strength he inspired in each of them. Though he is no longer by their side, his influence will continue to guide future generations, reminding them that with faith, determination, and family, anything is possible.
The family would like to thank Dr. Tyler Lash with Willis Knighton Oncology, Dr. Robert Smith with Louisiana Family Practice and Willis Knighton Hospice team, specifically Angela Blake, RN. Angela not only took amazing care of Mike through the final weeks, but she also guided the family with grace, wisdom, and compassion through the most difficult time a family can face. The family would also like to thank Tad and Dak Prescot and Shannon Rotenberg, Executive Director of the Faith Fight Finish Foundation for their help in getting Mike to M.D. Anderson in a timely manner.
Services honoring Mike will be held at Hillcrest Funeral Home in Haughton, Louisiana, on Saturday October 31st. Visitation will begin at 1:00pm with a Celebration of Life service immediately following at 2:00pm.
