

He proudly served our nation in the U.S. Navy and retired in 1993 as a Military Police Senior Investigator. Later he went to work for the Louisiana State Police and retired as a Special Agent Investigator, Dept. of Public Safety Police Officer, Alcohol, Tobacco and Control. He was stationed in Gaeta, Italy; Sigonella, Sicily, Italy; Houston, Texas; and served in Vietnam. He was deployed on the U.S.S. Duluth. Mike received numerous medals and decorations including: Navy Achievement Medal; Combat Action Ribbon; Meritorious Unit Commendation with 1 Bronze Star; Navy “E” Ribbon; Good Conduct Medal with 4 Bronze Stars; National Defense Service Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star; Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Bronze Star; Sea Service Deployment Ribbon; Navy & Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon with 1 Silver and 2 Bronze Stars; Navy Recruiting Service Ribbon; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; and Navy Pistol Marksmanship Ribbon.
He was a Diamond Member of the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line and enjoyed going on cruises with his family and friends, especially with his Mother before she died. Mike was a member of First Methodist Church in Shreveport.
He is survived by his sister, Betty Murphy Russo and her husband, John; Uncle Larry Mahaffey; nephew Gary Delaney; niece Valerie Walden; and ex-wife Mary Murphy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Pete and Edwina Murphy and sister Ila Ann Green.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 24, 2025 at Hill Crest Memorial Funeral Home in Haughton, Louisiana at 2:00 pm. Visitation will be held from 1:00 - 2:00 pm prior to the service. Dr. Steven Bell, Senior Pastor at First Methodist Church will preside. Burial will be held on Tuesday, November 25, 2025 at 10:30 am at Northwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery, 7970 Mike Clark Road, Keithville, Louisiana with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you give to the Charity of your choice. The family would also like to thank all of Mike’s Doctors and Nurses who cared for him over the past few years, as well as, Colonial Oaks Skilled Nursing Facility and the Carpenter House. May he rest in peace.
