Paul honorably retired from the United States Air Force after more than 28 years of dedicated service, culminating his career at SAC HQ as a Chief Master Sergeant. A decorated veteran, he completed 100 combat missions in Southeast Asia Theater as a B-52 tail gunner. His valor and commitment were recognized with numerous honors, including the Airman's medal, AF Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Combat Readiness Medal, AF Longevity Medal, AF National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Distinguished Flying Cross.
Following his military service, Paul continued his career at Sports Trans, where he worked for over 13 years in the Contracts and Procurement Department.
He was a devoted patriot who loved his country and cherished his family above all. A passionate fan of his beloved, Ohio State Buckeyes, he never missed a chance to support his team and enjoyed anything related to Buckeye sports. He found great joy in fishing, often spending peaceful hours by the water.
In his younger years, Paul excelled in the athletics—golfing, bowling, basketball, and baseball. His talent on the baseball field earned him a consideration for the New York Yankees draft before he chose to serve his country. A man of many interests, Paul was an avid reader and dedicated coin collector, always eager to learn and explore new subjects. His life reflected a deep love for his family, his nation, and the passions that brought him joy.
Paul is survived by his children, Randy Purdy (Annie Metzger), Martin Purdy (Jody), Pauline Purdy, and Richard Purdy; grandchildren, Krista McCarty (Steve), Kyle Purdy, McKenzie Halls (Andrew), Sam Purdy, Kris Purdy, Derek Purdy, and Ayla Purdy; great-grandchildren, Alyssa Dumas, Shea Wilson (Cody), Marion Halls; great-great grandchild, Charlotte Mae Wilson; brothers, Howard Purdy (Deborah) and Tom Purdy (Marge) and many nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his greatest "catch" Emma Lou Purdy (September 14, 2013); parents, Paul McKee Purdy (1996) and Helen Elizabeth Purdy (1985), his sister, Margaret "Peg" Beck (March 7, 2017), and daughter Charlotte Jean Wall (January 8, 2006).
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at 10 AM at Hill Crest Memorial Chapel, 601 Hwy 80, Haughton, Louisiana 71037.
In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Wounded Warriors Project, Disabled American Veterans, or Homes for our Troops.
The family would like to extend their gratitude and special thanks to his doctors, caregivers, the many VA members who helped him over the years, and to James and the Sullivan family for being such wonderful friends, supporters and wonderful neighbors for him.
