Robert Andrew Metheny

Our Dad went home to be with Jesus on August 29, 2026.

Dad was born on April 28, 1940, to Meshech and Loretta Metheny of the Terra Alta/Cranesville community in West Virginia. After high school, dad proudly served eight years in the United States Navy, serving aboard destroyers and traveling to many countries. His ship took part in the blockade of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis, a time he would always remember.

After his honorable discharge from the Navy, he married our mom, Doris (Dee) Seats Metheny, and together they enjoyed 61 wonderful years of marriage.

Dad worked for the Federal Government as a Construction General Foreman for the Bureau of Prisons, a career he took great pride in. After retiring, he was ready to do what he loved most—spend his days on their small farm.

Bob had four passions in his life: God, family, hard work, and being outdoors. Not only was he a devout Christian, but he tried to live his life being an example to others in the way he believed God required. His family was more important to him than anyone can imagine. He spent his life making sure that his family was taken care of and that they had more advantages than he ever had. Dad believed a man should know how to work with his hands—and he certainly did. He built our home, raised his own animals, and pretty much figured out how to do whatever needed to be done. He had a strong work ethic and took pride in providing for his family.

He loved the outdoors and especially loved deer hunting. He looked forward to hunting season every year and enjoyed the time he spent in the woods. Dad was the kind of man who didn't need a lot of fuss. Give him his family, his church, his farm, his hunting, and something to work on, and he was a happy man. He had a strong sense of humor and was always willing to lend a hand.

After learning he had Parkinson's in 2010, Dad knew he could no longer continue managing the land and animals as he once had. That was when Mom and Dad moved to Bossier City, Louisiana. It was a huge change for him, but he took to Louisiana as soon as he learned that there was deer hunting in Louisiana, too!

They became members of Cypress Baptist Church, where they found friendship, and fellowship within their church family. Dad loved God and valued that relationship even more as he grew older and wiser. Dad and Mom also enjoyed living in their adult community, Willow Lake, and participating in the activities there whenever they were able. Dad loved playing cards, dominoes, bingo and especially eating the desserts at every event.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Doris (Dee) Seats Metheny; daughter, Robin Mumpower and husband Chuck of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; son, Mark Metheny of Shreveport, Louisiana; granddaughter, Taylor Montgomery and husband Andrew; grandsons, Joshua Mumpower of Hawaii and Sam Mumpower and wife Melina of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

He is also survived by his brother, Don Metheny and wife Jane of Eugene, Oregon; niece, Jennifer Metheny and husband Chris Andrejko, also of Eugene, Oregon; nephew, Matthew Metheny of Washington State; and great-niece, Anna Jane Andrejko of Eugene, Oregon.

Dad was looking forward to meeting his first great-grandchild, due this December. We are thankful for the knowledge that one day, because of what Jesus did for us; we will all be together again.

Military funeral honors will be held at the Northwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery on Monday, October 5, 2026 at 11:30 a.m. The family welcomes those who wish to attend.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, September 12, at the Willow Lake Community Clubhouse, located on Airline Drive, from noon to 2 p.m.

The family wishes to thank everyone for the prayers lifted up on Dad's behalf, especially during the last month of his life. We also thank everyone for every act of kindness shown toward our Mom. We truly appreciate everything you did for them both.
