BOSSIER CITY LA – Services for Roy Gene Overmyer, 84, will be held on Thursday January 3, 2013 at 12:00 noon at Hill Crest Memorial Chapel with Herbert Prestige, Glenn Picket, and Bob King officiating.
Roy was born on September 28, 1928 in Garland, Arkansas, and went to be with the Lord on December 27, 2012 in Bossier City, Louisiana. He joined the United States Navy in 1947, where he learned the trade of electrician with the SEEBEES. After serving his country during the Korean Conflict, he was initiated in the IBEW Local 194 on October 20, 1952. He became very involved with the Union over the years as President of IBEW Local 194 and served on the Board of Trustees for the Shreveport Electrical Health and Welfare and Pension Funds in addition to numerous other committees. He was the outstanding apprentice award in 1956. He served as instructor for the Shreveport Area Joint and Apprenticeship School for many years. He was appointed as the Director of JATC until his retirement in January 1992. Roy was awarded his 60 year service award for his dedication and hard work in the IBEW local 194. Roy was a life member of the V.F.W. His hobbies included: gardening, cooking, spending time with family and friends, spending time at his camp house. He especially loved to fish, working with his tools, and doing projects around his house. He loved a good debate with family members and friends.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Lucas and Linnie Overmyer; two brothers, Herschel and Ken Overmyer; one sister, Betty Mohon
He is survived by two daughters, Mary Catherine Overmyer-Cotton and husband Bob, J. Gail Overmyer; grandson, Aubrie N. Starks III; a brother, John Overmyer; two sisters, Wanda Hunt and Carol Ann Clements along with many nieces, nephews and friends.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
