Vernon was born November 10, 1938 in Shreveport, LA to Estelle and Emmet Akins. On December 17, 1982, he married Yvonne Howington, the true love of his life. Vernon enjoyed time at the hunting club, watching LSU football, spending time with family and friends at the swimming pool or the lake. He was extremely talented in repairing small engines.
For the last 20 years, he was a crossing guard for Cope Middle School, helping students cross safely. Vernon will always be remembered for having a giving heart, a tremendous love for his wife, and being a loyal friend.
Vernon is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Jack Akins.
Mr. Akins is survived by: his wife Yvonne Akins; his children, Mark and wife Heather Akins, Diane and husband Steve Hernandez; six grandkids, seven great grandchildren, a niece and multiple nephews.
Visitation will be held on Monday, April 26th at Hill Crest Funeral Home, from 10 to 11 am, in the State Room, then with a Graveside Service to follow.
The family would like to thank the 4th floor staff at Willis Knighton Bossier and his personal physician, Patrick Deere for their compassion and empathy shown to him, his wife, and his family. The family would also like to thank the Benton Fire Department and the EMS for their professionalism, in the families time of need.
