William "Bill" Faxon Hunter, age 96, of Bossier City, Louisiana passed away on Wednesday, September 15, 2021. He was born November 25, 1924. William or “Faxon” as family & hometown folks called him, was born to Cora & Everett Hunter on November 25, 1924 in Coushatta, LA.
A visitation for Bill will be held Sunday, September 19, 2021 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM in the Chapel at Hill Crest Memorial Funeral Home, 601 Highway 80 East, Haughton, Louisiana 71037, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM.
Bill joined the Navy at 17 years of age. He was assigned to the U.S.S. Suwannee which went to the South Pacific, where it was attacked by Kamakazes. He was injured in the attack, which earned him a Purple Heart. When discharged after the war, he returned to Chicago and married Mary Marguerite Harriett. They moved to Coushatta, LA. where their children oldest children, Charles and Rita were born. After Chuck contracted Polio, Bill decided to join the Air Force. He moved the family to Tennessee.During the Korean War, he was deployed for 18 months. He remained at Sewart AFB for a total of ten years, where daughter Kim was born. After Tennessee, the family was stationed in Morocco, Germany, California and Kansas. In 1964, Bill was deployed to Vietnam. When he returned in 1965, he retired from the Air Force. Bill moved the family to Illinois where he worked for his father-in-law for 3 years. He then moved back to Coushatta. In 1970, Bill became a Postmaster in Powhatan, LA where he and Margie, also ran Margie & Bill’s Grocery until 1981. Bill then moved to Bossier City, where he was Postmaster at Elm Grove until he retired again. He retired from the Post Office in the 1980s. He made lots of friends through the years he spent as a Mason, Shriner and Postmaster. After his wife of 69 years, Margie, passed away, Bill moved to The Bloom. He then made a new set of friends, playing bean bag baseball & singing. After a fall/stroke in January, Bill was moved to Old Brownlee Community Care Center, where he was improving until he had another stroke on September 10th. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 15.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margie Hunter and son, Charles “Chuck” Hunter.
Bill is survived by his daughters, Rita Deuth and husband Greg, and Kim Pettigrew and husband John; grandchildren, Jennifer Deuth-Fritts and husband Charlie, Paul Deuth and wife Jenny, Laura Tolar and husband Will, Lisa Edwards, Leah Harris and husband Nick, Jonathan Edwards and wife Allie; great grandchildren, Rowan Harris, Autumn Harris, Wyatt Edwards, Olivia Tolar, Tucker Williams and Presley Kirkpatrick.
