Harvey Cohen, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and cherished companion, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2024, at the age of 92. Born on June 28, 1931, in the Bronx, NY, Harvey's life was marked by his intellectual curiosity, diverse interests, and the deep love he held for his family.
Harvey grew up in the vibrant Bronx neighborhood, the son of Yetta and Dave Cohen. He shared his early years with his sister Joan Beck and foster brother Sydney Bernsweich. After an adventurous childhood, Harvey pursued his academic interests at the University of Chicago, where he initially aimed to study medicine but eventually found his true calling in electrical engineering. This pivot led him to a successful career as an Electrical Engineer, a field where his keen mind and meticulous nature could truly shine.
In his personal life, Harvey was first married to Sandra Cohen, with whom he shared 45 wonderful years until her passing in 2000. Together, they raised their daughters in Mount Vernon, NY, creating a loving home filled with warmth and laughter. Tragically, their daughter Jerilynne Pinsker passed away in 1992, a loss that Harvey carried with him.
Later in life, Harvey found companionship and love with Ruth Alber Rosenberg, with whom he shared more than 25 joyful years. Their relationship was a testament to the enduring power of love and companionship.
Harvey's contributions to his community were profound. He was a devoted member of the Mount Vernon Board of Education for over 15 years, serving some of those years as President. His commitment to education and his leadership were instrumental in shaping the local school system. Additionally, Harvey had a passion for the police department and served as an auxiliary police officer in Mount Vernon, exemplifying his dedication to public service and safety.
Harvey's passions extended far beyond his professional achievements and community service. He was an enthusiast of model airplanes, a skilled trap shooter, and a history aficionado, particularly of United States warfare. In his retirement, he discovered a love for shuffleboard and lapidary, earning a reputation as the "retired champ" on the shuffleboard court. Harvey had a unique knack for excelling in all his pursuits, a trait that endeared him to all who knew him.
He is survived by his devoted daughter, Shari DiPaola, and his grandchildren: Beth Pinsker, Alexander DiPaola, Jarred DiPaola, and his great-grandsons, Leo and Calvin DiPaola. Harvey's legacy is one of love, wisdom, and an unyielding zest for life.
Harvey Cohen's life was a rich tapestry of love, achievement, and endless curiosity. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A graveside service for Harvey will be held Tuesday, May 28, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Sharon Gardens Cemetery, 273 Lakeview Avenue, Valhalla, NY 10595.
