Marcia L. Weinshel of Danbury, CT, formerly of Yonkers NY, passed away on October 17, 2015, at the age of 86. She suffered a traumatic brain injury seven years ago, which left her diminished, but her spirit remained intact.
Marcia was born in Brooklyn, NY on August 21, 1929, to the late Saul and Rose Stambler. She married Noah Weinshel, at the young age of 18, and raised three children while continuing her education. She graduated from Hunter College, and then pursued a Master’s degree in Education from NYU. She had a varied career starting out as an artist, designing neck ties, then as a special education teacher and, eventually, with Noah, in his accounting office. She was brilliant and insightful, a lover of opera, travel, crossword puzzles, and cats. Marcia relished her role as a mother and a grandmother. She and Noah made charitable contributions to several causes through the Stiefel Foundation, which was donated to them by loyal clients. The Weinshel children continue to donate through the foundation, to carry on their traditions.
Marcia is survived by her younger brother Stephen Stambler (Mimi), of Bradenton FL; her 3 children – Elizabeth (Joel) of Riverdale NY, David of Danbury CT, Sarah (Preston) and grandchildren Adam and Nina Lurie of Scarsdale NY, and several nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Noah and her “third daughter”, daughter-in-law, Gloria Weinshel.
A graveside ceremony open to friends and family will be held at Sharon Gardens in Valhalla on Sunday, October 25, 2015 at 9:30 a.m. A reception will follow at Sarah and Preston’s home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Metropolitan Opera House, the Dr. Joseph B. and Lillian Stiefel Foundation, or a charity of one’s choice.
