She was born on January 19,1927 to Paula and Joel Bruckenstein in Vienna, Austria. Upon the loss of her mother (Auschwitz) and father (Dachau) she was one of 13 children allowed to immigrate to the United States via the Kindertransport. She was raised in Bronx, NY by her aunt and uncle.
In 1950 she married Helmut Bengel in Bronx, NY. celebrating 60 years of marriage until his death in 2010.
Passionate about Holocaust education, her commitment to Judaism extended to her community involvement with Hadassah. She was a passionate speaker about her experiences at several Universities, organizations, and most noteably at The United States Holocaust Museum. She is survived by her daughter Paula Bengel Oberman who was married to Stuart Oberman 35 years until his passing in 2009. She is also survived by her two grandsons, Justin and Derek, daughters-in-law, Sarita and Adina, and 5 great grandchildren: Liat 15, Talia 8, Shuly 8, Tovah 6 and Samuel 5.
Funeral services will be held Monday, January 22, 2024 at 12PM, at Riverside Memorial Chapel 101 Sawmill River Road, Hawthorne, NY, followed by burial at Cedar Park Cemetery, 735 Forest Avenue, Emerson, NJ.
