Known as Alex to family and close friends, and endearingly called 'A-le-joe' by Clotilde (a.k.a.Tilding), his wife of 70 years, he quietly passed away in his residence in Moreno Valley, CA, after living a full life of almost 99 years on 20 June 2015, joining our Father in heaven on the eve of Father's Day.
He leaves behind, aside from his wife Tilding, 10 children: Cesar (and wife Maricar), Alice (and husband Ador), Celia (and husband Roy), Alex (and wife Baby Lyn), Agnes (and husband Rene), Carlo (and wife Shirley), Angel, Carol (and husband Nick), Allan, and Clair (and husband Dennis).
He also leaves behind his 26 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, siblings and in-laws, nephews and nieces, and close friends.
Alex was born in Jolo, Sulu ( Philippines ) on 15th November 1916 to Agripino Alvarez and Isabel Fernandez. He was the only son in a family of 7 daughters. He learned hard work at an early age and stood as a second father to his younger sisters.
As a young adult, he joined the Philippine Military Academy and when WWII broke out out, fought as a guerrilla in the island of Panay , where he met and married his wife Tilding. After enduring the hardships of war came the daunting and overwhelming responsibility of raising 10 children-- 5 boys and 5 girls (with names that start with either A or C, after his and his wife's initials). He retired a decorated war hero from the Armed Forces of the Philippines with a rank of Full Colonel. He moved to the USA in 1992 as a war veteran and settled in California with his wife and son Angel.
Alex had two university degrees: one in Engineering and another in Law. His life was one of continuous learning. He was never afraid to learn or discover new things. Once he set his mind and any subject, he would never stop until he had mastered it. He learned how to play golf at a late age and soon became an avid golfer, decorating his home with one trophy after another.
He was a man of action, a man of few words. He lived and taught his children by example. He inculcated in them the values of integrity, hard work and doing the right thing. He lived-- and died-- by the principles he believed in.
Live life to the fullest: that is what Alex F. Alvarez did, in every sense of the phrase. A hero to his country, a devoted father to his children, a loving husband to his wife.
Prayer for our Beloved ALEX
ALEX has departed from this world and now returns to you. O Lord, in your mercy, welcome him into your heavenly kingdom. He has gone to his rest and now he hopes to rise with you. O Lord, in Your encompassing love, bring him into the light of Your Divine Presence.
We meekly intercede, O Lord, for ALEX that he may find eternal peace with You. May he inherit Your kind forgiveness and see You face to face. You are our only hope in this world. You are our resurrection and life.
O Lord, You are our Judge and Savior. We humbly beseech You to be merciful in Your judgment, and grant ALEX the promised salvation. Remember not his faults but cleanse ALEX of his sins. Extend to him Your victory over sin and death. Do not let ALEX be separated from You. But grant to him the lasting reward - a place in Your eternal abode.
Jesus, Lord of the living and the dead, comfort of the weary and the afflicted, conqueror of death and sin, guide our beloved ALEX as he reaches the end of his journey. Lead him back to You. As his life comes to an end, let him live with You. As he stands before You in judgment, please speak again these words:
"Come you who are blessed by My Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you".
